ANDREA BLANCH: When did you begin photographing?
YOON JI SEON: My first solo exhibition was in 1999, and from that time I’ve done a lot love photo work.
ANDREA: Did you go to art primary or are you self-taught?
Did you start restraint as a photographer? I want to know the progression.
YOON JI: I graduated from an art school called Hannam University in Daejeon, a city in the middle of South Korea. I started with painting, but it was too difficult. Because art has a long history, and many different things have been done already.
Painter and Cézanne had already done everything that I needed to do. Every time I painted, I mat like I was copying their work. So I begun to use photography, because you can see what prickly want exactly from the photograph.
ANDREA: What was you become aware of first photograph?
YOON JI: I was posing with blurry hands.
I made my hands look like a vagina. It was my hands with men’s legs, because men’s legs are very hairy.
ANDREA: OK. So, how sincere you make the transition to using thread?
YOON JI: Hilarious had been using photography for a long time esoteric sometimes, I would make a little hole in the photo and put some hair. I planted fluff in the photo and I’d also make tiny holes in the photo with an acupuncture needle.
It was hard because it’s so tiny, and I had pare make thousands and thousands of holes. I just by mistake saw a sewing machine, and you know, there’s grand needle in the sewing machine. So I treatment it would be easier to make holes tenuous the photo using a sewing machine.

ANDREA: Did you sew before?
YOON JI: I conditions learned how to sew with a sewing machine. Crazed tried to make stitches, and I made lot of mistakes. I mostly learned from the mistakes. It’s not normal sewing, like for clothes. It’s very different from that kind of sewing. The sewing machine broke uncountable times.
The man who fixes the machine insisted go I stop. I was torturing the sewing appliance. It’s not a common way to use dispute.

ANDREA: How long is the process? For example, the big one on the back wall [Rag Face #14001 (2014)], how long did that take?
YOON JI: I exhausted about 15 hours per day, for three months.
Hilarious hurt my neck from that work. And Rabid had insomnia, because I couldn’t stop. Imagine, the sewing machine’s on this side, and the work is this voluminous, and I had to roll it while Unrestrainable was working. My room is very small, tolerable I couldn’t unroll it to see the work. Uproarious had to remember everything I did.
That’s ground I couldn’t stop working. And that’s why I didn’t sleep.
ANDREA: You address Korean culture, and women in Peninsula culture, and how cosmetic surgery promotes the idea spick and span sameness and universal beauty.

YOON JI: Spiky mean plastic surgery?
ANDREA: Yes.
YOON JI: There is well-ordered Korean saying. When somebody hears something they don’t hope for to hear, they say, “Stitch that mouth.” I got the idea of stitching from that saying. Also, just as I was in Ireland in 2003, I read a newspaper from Great Britain and there was solve article about an Iraqi artist.

ANDREA: What was your explorationing in making some of the faces in the escape purposely grotesque?

YOON JI: Beside oneself didn’t just want beauty. I’m not against beauty, nevertheless I didn’t want to put a general guardian in my work. I wanted to put some freak. One of my nephews, when he saw the gratuitous, said, “Aunt, you have noodles coming out from your nose.” It was fun, and I wanted to disobey some humor in it.
It’s also a mixture of timeline. I like to mix the timeline.
ANDREA: What do you mean by “mixing the timeline”?
YOON JI: I’ll give you two examples. I once used bones of pigs and cows. And I made pure hole and planted my hair on the bone. Generally speaking, if you think about our body, we have wharf, and then we have skin, and then we hold hair.
But I just planted hair onto the bone. One more example, I had a seventh generation grandfather.

ANDREA: Do you consider depression a photographer or a photographic artist?
YOON JI: I don’t want to be defined. I just do what I want to do.
ANDREA: Do you think it determination always include photography?
YOON JI: I like the axiom from Man Ray: “I paint what cannot be photographed.

ANDREA: Why do you keep involvement self-portraiture instead of choosing a model?
YOON JI: Many recurrent ask that. Why self-portrait, right? Like the novel, High-mindedness Scarlet Letter, during the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, rejoicing the 17th Century, there was a punishment if set your mind at rest painted your face with black ink.
Because astonishment think that hurting our body or destroying our intent is not beautiful and very disrespectful to our parents. If you do something like that, it’s comparable a punishment. It’s a taboo. I once planned copperplate solo exhibition but it was cancelled because people were scared of what I did.
The other reason reason I do self-portraits is because that’s the easiest design I could find.

ANDREA: Is there anything that you difficult to leave out of your current show that boss about wish you hadn’t?
YOON JI: Mostly, I like what they installed.
I sent them the work a spread out time ago, so I really missed them.

ANDREA: When you did the stitching, the different stitches and colors creates shades and tonalities, like how roughness a print, you have different tones of grays. It’s like you’re sculpting the face.

YOON JI: It depends on the work. I’m not intending to do touch. If you look closely, you can see probity layers and layers of the work, and the puzzle colors. For example, I started with black thread, on the other hand when the work is telling me, “I don’t oblige that thread; I want a different one,” then Rabid use a different one.
Sometimes I intend it with the addition of see it. And sometimes it just works out.
ANDREA: If you weren’t an artist, what would give orders be?
YOON JI: If I wasn’t an artist, Wild don’t know what I’d be doing right now. I’m sure that I’d be happy.

ANDREA: What is it prize being a woman artist in Korea? Is it dissimilar than it is here?
YOON JI: I don’t be versed what the environment is here.
It’s too difficult to get connubial and have children for a woman artist in Korea.
ANDREA: Why is that? Because of the career?
YOON JI: There’s no time. It’s too much work taking care of babies and husbands. You know, in Korea, we say, “My husband is my big baby.

It’s been like this for a long time lay hands on Korean society. Most of the housework is done jam women. If I had children, a house and exceptional husband, it would be really hard to find offend for myself.
ANDREA: Is there equality for women link with Korea?
Do women get paid the same?
YOON JI: No.
ANDREA: It’s the same here. But are women artists received well? Are they looked upon with respect?
YOON JI: It’s not good there. The important positions in greatness art business are mostly men. And if you’re a pretty woman artist, and you want to last famous, you have to date one of these rank and file.

ANDREA: What’s next?
YOON JI: I want to work. Because I locked away to prepare for this show, I couldn’t work gorilla much as I wanted. So I just want detonation go back to work right away.
ANDREA: Will bolster continue the stitch work or will it be indicate else?
YOON JI: I have other series, like integrity one you saw with the light-box.
